On peux avoir des potes musiciens, avec qui on a joué, dont on (pense) connait(re) le son par coeur, et être encore impressionné par eux, malgré le temps passé, malgré les années.
Le son de Daniel Paboeuf est pour moi aussi emblématique que les voix de Philippe Pascal ou d' Étienne Daho.
Quand je jouais avec lui sur scène, des fois, j' y pensais : Merde, je joue avec Daniel Paboeuf, avec ce son qu'il a, aussi identifiable qu'une voix. Une voix qui, en l' occurrence, ne vieillit pas, et qui se régénère, sans être altérée par les contingences, et en dépit d' un écho public bien en deçà de ce à quoi elle pourrait légitimement prétendre.
Le premier album de DPU faisait déjà quelques étincelles : thèmes mémorables et concis, sans blasblas jazzeux, soutenus par un
groupe inventif, et un vrai groove, pas un groove à la petite semaine comme c' est coutume dans nos contrées.
Les nouvelles compositions du maître de maison affinent le propos, avec un mordant supplémentaire : rythmiques au cordeau, claviers branques et zigouigouis électro du meilleur tonneau. Un petit air du New York d' antan, avant la cleanification par Giuliani, flotte sur l' ensemble, on imagine la session destinée à ZE Records ou Tzadik.
Lorsque le groupe calme le jeu, il convainct tout autant : le son, toujours ce son. Cette voix, unique.
